It is an honor to assume the role of Acting Dean of the School of Social Sciences and Humanities at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies. I will endeavor to fulfill the responsibilities entrusted to me to the best of my ability and to serve this distinguished academic and intellectual institution, which, in a relatively short period of time, has secured a prominent place in the Arab and international academic landscape.
At the heart of the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies’ mission is a commitment to the production of knowledge in the social sciences and humanities, in the—Arabic—language of the region, about the region, from the region, and for the region. This mission is grounded in methodological plurality and, at the same time, in sustained critical debate and dialogue with diverse intellectual and theoretical traditions, across languages, within the broader global sphere of intellectual exchange.
The Doha Institute also aspires to move beyond the transmission and acquisition of knowledge toward contributing to its intellectual and theoretical foundations, enabling us not merely to engage with existing scholarship, but to make a substantive contribution to the cumulative advancement of human knowledge, as generations from the region before us have done. Achieving this requires the ability to engage critically and intellectually with a wide range of schools of thought and approaches—mainstream and non-mainstream, critical and otherwise—from the West, the East, and the Global South, while subjecting them all to careful and rigorous scrutiny. Our ultimate aspiration is to be producers of knowledge, not merely consumers of it, particularly because knowledge production is far from a neutral act. This is precisely where the importance of critical thinking lies.
Through its fourteen academic programs, the School of Social Sciences and Humanities plays a central role in advancing the scholarly mission of the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies. It is a key pillar in the Institute’s endeavor to build an academic institution founded on rigorous scholarly and methodological standards in teaching and research, while upholding the highest professional standards, academic freedom, integrity, community engagement, and service to society.
At the School of Social Sciences and Humanities, we are firmly committed to our students. We seek to develop their intellectual capacities and research skills, encourage and strengthen critical thinking, nurture their intellectual curiosity, and deepen their awareness of ethical responsibility and academic integrity.
We are equally committed to engaging with the social environment that shapes our reality and informs our understanding of it. We are not merely aware of the challenges and concerns facing our societies; we strive to ensure that our research interests and scholarly production remain responsive to the social contexts in which we live. Our aim is for the knowledge we produce to contribute to a deeper understanding of our societies, to serve them, and to enhance their resilience and their capacity for development and emancipation, both in the present and in the future.
Fulfilling this ambitious mission depends on a highly qualified and diverse faculty staff committed to carrying out its academic responsibilities with dedication: educating generations of researchers who can contribute meaningfully to their societies, and undertaking rigorous and purposeful research at a time when knowledge has become one of the principal sources of power. Our faculty staff is equally conscious of the significance and scale of the societal responsibility entrusted to it.
The School also relies on a dedicated administrative and technical team whose work is essential to advancing the Institute’s mission and sustaining the achievements made thus far.
During my tenure, I will work diligently to strengthen institutional traditions and further cultivate a culture of teamwork, cooperation, trust, mutual respect, and shared responsibility. I will also seek to preserve and enhance an enabling and stimulating environment in which students, faculty members, administrative staff, and technical staff work together in harmony toward fulfilling the mission of the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies.
I am fully aware that responsibility is, above all, a duty rather than a distinction, and I recognize both the weight of the task entrusted to me and the significance of the confidence it represents. Given the standing and reputation of the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, this responsibility is twofold: to preserve the achievements already attained and to build further upon them.
This makes the responsibility all the more demanding, but it also presents an inspiring challenge that calls for a response commensurate with its significance—one that requires the collective engagement and contribution of the entire School community.
