The DI through the Office of Institutional Effectiveness recently hosted a four-day training workshop on quality assurance in higher education in collaboration with the UK-based Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) from the 5th to the 8th November 2017. The workshop aimed at assessing and developing the DI’s internal quality assurance processes in light of its preparation for the “International Quality Review (IQR)” application – an evidence-based peer review conducted by the QAA that benchmarks the quality assurance processes of institutions outside the UK against international quality assurance standards, specifically the European Standards and Guidelines (ESG).

In its first day, the workshop included an open session delivered by two quality assurance experts from the QAA who have extensive experience in evaluating higher education providers and supporting institutions in building their quality assurance capacity. The workshop was attended by DI faculty, students and staff in addition to external participants from the the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, Qatar University, Hamad Bin Khalifa University, and Community College of Qatar. The external participants are specialists in areas related to institutional accreditation, institutional planning and performance, and quality assurance in higher education. In his welcome speech, Professor Yasir Suleiman – DI’s Provost and Acting President – stressed the importance of quality assurance and continuous improvement as part of the institutional culture of the DI and how the DI strives to be a leader in this area at the national level. The open session introduced attendees to the QAA, quality assurance in the UK, the UK Quality Code, the IQR, and the ESG.

The remainder of the 3-day workshop, which included breakout sessions, provided training to DI faculty, students and staff on quality assurance in higher education with a focus on the European Quality Standards, in addition to an overview on the IQR process.

Dr. Jad Kawtharani, the Director of the Office of Institutional Effectiveness at the DI, said: “The workshop is an important milestone in DI’s institutional journey and will be a stepping stone for a series of activities that aim at realizing continuous improvement and enhancing institutional and academic quality. This is the start of DI’s path to achieving institutional accreditation and benchmarking against international standards.”

The final session synthesized the proceedings and activities of the workshop into an institutional road map and improvement action plan for the DI in its preparation for successfully obtaining the IQR granted by the QAA.
